It has become more and more common for office workers to eat lunch in front of their computer screens surrounded by their work. This may be tempting to do especially when other people in your office are also eating at their desks. You may not want to appear lazy or uncommitted to your work. However, eating at your desk may actually be really bad for your health and your productivity level. Keep reading below to see why you should avoid eating lunch at your desk whenever possible.
1 – Your brain needs a break. Have you ever felt stuck on a problem or question and just couldn’t figure out what to do next? You leave work, listen to the radio for a while, and then all of a sudden the answer comes to you out of nowhere. This is because your brain had some time to rest and refocus. Leaving your desk for a while and allowing your brain to focus on other things will help bring a new perspective to your work and make you more productive. It is important to put space between yourself and your workload at some point in the day.
2 – It may cause you to gain weight. People tend to snack more when sitting in front of their computer screen. The increased snacking will lead to weight gain. Instead of eating at your desk, get up and be active. The increased physical activity will help you stay fit and feel happier.
3 – It will improve your relationship with your co-workers. Eating lunch with others is a great way to get to know one another better. Use this time to get to know the people on your team or in your office. You may quickly find out that your difficult co-worker is actually really funny or the girl that was always too quiet is quite nice. You may soon realize that you actually like your co-workers. You may be surprised by how much more enjoyable your day can become when your surrounded by people that you actually like.
4 –It’s great for networking. You can use this time to catch up with someone that you haven’t seen in a while or introduce yourself to someone in another department. You can use this as an opportunity to learn more about a potential job opportunity or learn more about a different position. Connecting with other people in your field or office can only help you when it comes time for promotions or new opportunities.
5 – Eating at your desk is gross. When you eat in front of your computer screen crumbs naturally fall into your keyboard or on your desk. The keyboard is hard to clean and you may not even notice that food particles are stuck there between the keys. If your desk and keyboard aren’t cleaned regularly, you may begin to track ants or other bugs to your work space.
There are many great reasons to avoid eating lunch at your desk. Give yourself a break at lunch time and get away from your desk. Sit with friends, go for a walk, or catch up with someone you haven’t seen in a while. Taking this much needed time will help you feel more productive and happier throughout your workday.
