Everyone struggles with self-confidence at some point in their life. Even the most self-assured person has had to overcome thoughts of self-doubt at one time or another. If you give into these feelings of self-doubt you may never achieve your true potential in life. Don’t let a lack of self-confidence hold you back from going after your dreams. Instead, focus on improving your self-assurance so that you can have the confidence to go after the things you really want in life. Self-confidence is not something that you are born with or without. It is a skill that requires learning, practice, and dedication. Here are some simple tasks you can follow to increase your self-confidence.
- Banish negative thoughts from your mind. Don’t let negative self-talk take over your thoughts. Whenever phrases such as “I can’t” or “I’m not good enough” start to creep into your mind, make a conscious effort to replace them with positive thoughts instead. You will eventually believe your own self-talk. If you constantly tell yourself that you can’t accomplish your goals, you won’t believe deep down that you are capable of achieving them. If you keep telling yourself that you can achieve your goals, you will make extra efforts to make sure that you are successful.
- Take pride in your appearance. Always leave the house looking presentable. The way you look on the outside can have an impact on how you feel on the inside. A nice outfit, new haircut, or even just a long hot shower can give your self-confidence a boost and make you feel ready to tackle the world. The more put together you look, the more confidence that you will radiate. Also, other people do make assumptions about you based on the way you present yourself to the world. The better you present yourself, the more willing people are to believe in your abilities.
- Surround yourself with positive and supportive people. Don’t let negative people impact the way that you view yourself or the world. Don’t hang out with people that make you feel bad about yourself or that are constantly focusing on the negative aspects of life. It is almost impossible to boost your self-confidence when you are constantly surrounded by negative people. Businessman Jim Rohn once said, “You’re the average of the five people you spend most of your time with.” If you want to stop having negative thoughts, stop hanging out with negative people. Don’t let other people’s negativity or self-doubt get in the way of your progress. Spend time with people that make you feel good about yourself.
- Learn new skills. Pay attention to what is driving your self-doubt. Do you feel as though you could use more training on a specific computer system or could use some pointers on effective presentation skills? Don’t be afraid to sign up for a new class or to ask someone to be your mentor. If you feel as though you are often unprepared for meetings or don’t have the industry knowledge that you need to be successful than take the time to learn as much as possible and prepare for any possible questions prior to your meetings. The more you learn, the more confidence you will have in your abilities.
- Smile more. When you smile, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. Endorphins are considered to be natural pain killers and also make you feel happier. When you are happier, you will naturally feel more confident. Also, smiles are contagious. If you make an effort to smile at other people, they will smile as well. This will help you create better positive relationships with others.
